Ask Me About - The Caribbean

The best way to understand the region, is to know that the Caribbean sea contains many islands. These islands, which are part of a massive archipelago, stretch from Bermuda in the Northwest to Trinidad in the Southeast. The nane is derived from the native ameridians, the Caribs, who were the dominant tribe at the time of European exploration of the New World.

The Caribbean is a region of the Americas that consists of the Caribbean Sea, its islands and the surrounding coasts

This expansive region is southeast of the Gulf of Mexico/North American mainland, east of Central America, and north of South America.

Fun fact - the islands also have another name, the West Indies. This is because the most famous European explorer, Christopher Columbus, named the islands the West Indies, because he came upon them when he sailed west instead of east searching for a new trade route to East India.

So the people of the region are Caribbean people as well as being West Indians, even though it is established that they, with the exception of Indian immigrants who were brought to the islands after the abolishing of the Atlantic Slave Trade, have no traditional connection to India.
